Summary of 2025 Results

  • The program was offered in 19 sites (21 programs) across Waterloo Region.
  • In total, 420 children were enrolled in the 2025 program.
    • 370 children completed the full program.
    • The program supported 229 children who did not speak English at home and an additional 16 children who spoke some English, as well as a second language at home.
    • Over 41 different languages were spoken among all participants.
    • The program is designed with 44, 2-hour classes, for a total of 88 hours of instruction.
  • Program Delivery Staff:
    • 54 paid Instructors and 10 Placement Students supported the program.
    • 621 hours of time was given by in-class volunteers to support the children in the program.

Literacy Growth

  • Letter Sounds: Letter-sound knowledge significantly improved from approximately 1 letter to 10 letters after program completion.
  • Phonological Awareness: Improved ability to hear the sound parts in words and to segment the sound parts in words.
  • Vocabulary Knowledge: Children knew more words and on average increased their vocabulary at a faster rate than their peer counterparts, with mean post-test scores indicating a 6-month improvement in receptive vocabulary.
  • 34% of children experienced 9-month’s vocabulary growth, with 20.5% increasing their vocabulary knowledge by 1 year or more.

Growth in Classroom Learning Behaviour Skills and Self-Regulation

  • Children in the program experienced significant 6.1-point improvement in their ability to self-regulate and navigate the classroom environment. At the end of the program, children were more independent, attentive to the class routines, and engaged with the learning materials.

Feedback from Parents/Guardians

A multitude of letter testimonials, submitted by parents/guardians every year, have cited the importance of the program for their children. Many parents indicated their child:

  • was better able to identify letter-sounds and was beginning to blend sounds together to read words.
  • demonstrated better social skills and ability to interact with peers and adults.
  • showed improved speech and communication skills.
  • felt more confident about the school setting and separating from a parent/guardian/caregiver.

All parent/guardian respondents said they would tell a friend about the program.
