Get Ready for School
Our Spring 2021 application for the virtual Get Ready for School @ Home program is now open. To apply, please click here.
The 2021 Get Ready for School @ Home program is available only to:
- families in Waterloo Region
- children born in 2017
- accompanied in each class by a supporting adult
Space is limited. Get Ready for School @ Home is run in two sessions, winter and spring. A family may participate in only one of the two sessions.
Due the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, Strong Start’s in-person Get Ready for School™ program will not be running this year. To support children who will be entering Kindergarten in 2021, we have developed an online Get Ready for School @ Home™ program. The program will run twice between January and June, with a winter session and a spring session.
Get Ready for School @ Home™ program
Offered only to families living in Waterloo Region, Get Ready for School @ Home is a 10-week program, consisting of 20, 1-hour classes designed to support children ages 3-4 in gaining the necessary skills for a successful start to Kindergarten. For our program schedule, click here.
The program is delivered online in the winter/spring, by a team of trained Instructors. A bag of new learning materials and resources is provided to the children for use at home during online classes, and are theirs to keep. Parents are encouraged to use these materials to continue to practice skills their children learn in class.
The Get Ready for School @ Home program is a shorter, online version of our original research-based program. The activities are particularly beneficial for children who are learning English and for children from low to middle-income families. The program focuses on helping children increase their vocabulary, letter-sound knowledge, self-regulation and learning behaviours. The program emphasizes the development of early literacy and self-regulation skills, which are the essential building blocks for children, as they prepare to enter their formal school experience.
The Get Ready for School @ Home program also provides instruction and coaching for the children’s parents, so they are better able to support their child’s learning at home. Throughout the program, parents learn how they can reinforce the skills their children are learning. Parent involvement and engagement encourages young learners and helps to build positive view of learning and school.
