The Peter Hallman Memorial Fast Pitch Tournament brings top ranked teams to Waterloo Region every summer for a weekend of action, adrenaline, and competition. The tournament, named in memory of the late Peter Hallman, an avid baseball player and enthusiast, businessman and community leader, was held this year in St. Clements from June 24-26, 2016. The Scarborough Force took home the trophy with a 19-7 win on Sunday, beating the Toronto Gators in a stunning final game. It truly was a wonderful weekend, with sports fans of all ages in attendance.

Strong Start was lucky to be the charity partner for the event, sharing in the 50/50 raffle, silent auction, and diner proceeds. Strong Start staff, volunteers, and board members were on site all weekend, selling tickets, staffing the booths, and telling our story. We extend our sincere appreciation to all of the silent auction donors for their generosity, which helped raise over $1,100 for children’s literacy.

We had an amazing selection of prizes from donors including: Swanson’s Home Hardware, Innocente Brewing Company, Block Three Brewing Company, Stone Hammer Brewing, Your Neighbourhood Credit Union, Radisson Hotel Kitchener Waterloo, Audi Kitchener-Waterloo, inSeason Home+Garden, New Orleans Pizza, Exotic Wings & Pet Things, Heidelberg Restaurant and Tavern, Hoffman’s Strawberries, My Sister’s Kitchen, Jones Feed Mill Ltd., Martin’s Family Fruit Farm, Stemmler’s Meats and Cheese, BYMA’s Tire & Auto Service Centre Inc., the Listowel Golf Club, and many individuals.

We also extend our sincere appreciation to all members of the organizing committee for the Peter Hallman Memorial Fast Pitch Tournament, with special thanks to Dennis Dosman, Jim and Sue Hallman, and Bernie Burnett. The high-quality tournament ran smoothly, with attendees commenting on their enjoyment of the games, scoring and announcing, and food selection. We also say thank you to members of Strong Start’s “family” for volunteering their time over the weekend, and for their continued passion for helping children learn to read.
