Wow! What a Feeling

At the conclusion of the Spring 2004 session of Strong Start®, the children who participated gathered together with their Volunteer Coaches to celebrate their success. It was not an elaborate event. They just took a few minutes out of their classroom time to have cookies and juice. Their teachers couldn’t be there the whole time, but dropped in to thank the volunteers. The principal presented each child with a certificate. “Way to Go” it said, “You did a great job working on your letters, sounds and words!”

Following the ceremony, a teacher bounded into the Principal’s office with great excitement, to report the comments of one of her 6 year-old graduates, as he showed his classmates his certificate,

“Wow! That was the best time in my whole life!”

It wasn’t the cookies and juice that made it great. It was the pride of accomplishment and the feeling of self-confidence. He knew that adults cared about him and that reading was important. Most of all, he knew that he could do it!
