Letters Sounds and Words Program for English Language Learners

The Letters Sounds and Words program – Standard has proven successful with children aged 5-7 for whom English as a second language is a factor in their learning.

At the request of Program Resource Teachers of the Waterloo Region District School Board, Strong Start® has created a version of its existing Letters, Sounds and Words program to accommodate the needs of children age 7-9 who are new immigrants faced with the challenge of learning to speak and read English at the same time. The goals of the program remain the same with special emphasis on selected activities and extra instructions to accommodate children who do not yet speak English.

This is a joint project between Strong Start® and the E.S.L. Resource Teachers of the Waterloo Region District School Board. Wendy Campbell, E.S.L. Resource Teacher with the Board and Strong Start® Program Co-ordinator, Mieke Schroeder are leading this important project. We have successfully completed a pilot of the accommodations to the program and are introducing this version for use in the Waterloo Region District School Board in 2009. Once well established here, the program may be offered to other Boards in the province already using our Letters Sounds and Words program – Standard for children aged 5-7. The roles, responsibilities and implementation model are the same for both versions of the program.

This project is funded by the United Way of Kitchener Waterloo.
