Changes In Gift Giving
Change is in the air when it comes to gift-giving to celebrate happy occasions with loved ones. People are choosing to help improve the quality of life in their community and the world, with donations to charity in the name of the person for whom they would normally purchase a gift or an event to be celebrated. Recently, Amanda and Dave Garbe were married. Literacy is important to them so they chose to make a donation to Strong Start in honour of their wedding. Thank you Amanda and Dave for thinking of the young learners in your community.
At Christmas, members of the Murdoch and Silvester families celebrated in a similar way. Instead of buying gifts for each other, they gave to Strong Start to help ensure that all children learn to read. A very warm, heartfelt Thank You to Su Murdoch and Harry Laur of Barrie; Carolyn and Jim Hooper of Simcoe; Debbie Silvester and Lorne Silvester of Toronto for their thoughtfulness and generosity.

A Different Kind of Corporate Giving
Recently, as part of a business arrangement between Student Transportation of Canada (school bus operators) and GROWMARK (supplier of biodiesel fuel), a decision was made to donate to a charity of STC’s choosing. Thank you Student Transportation of Canada for choosing Strong Start and thank you GROWMARK for your gift.
The employees of XCG Consultants Ltd. in Kitchener, as with many companies, regularly hold “dress down Fridays”, paying for the privilege of wearing casual clothing to work. The money collected is then donated to a charity chosen by the employees. Thank you Employees of XCG Consultants for your gift to Strong Start.

The people of Waterloo Region, since its beginning over 200 years ago, have enjoyed a well-earned reputation for pulling together to improve the quality of life in their community. That tradition is very evident in the much-appreciated support given to Strong Start® to help ensure that all children learn to read.
Mieke Schroeder, a retired educator who has given so much of her time, energy and talents to Strong Start® has, once again, made a generous donation. Thank you Mieke for all you do!
Another integral part of Strong Start® is Joanne Mumford; enthusiastic Trainer, fundraising committee member and, along with husband Ted Schlotzhauer, a loyal donor to the Strong Start® Charitable Foundation. Thank you, Joanne and Ted, for your continuing support.

One of our newest contributors is also a fairly new complement to the rich mosaic of this Region: The Corporate Service Club of the City of Waterloo. Its members, employees of the City of Waterloo, have made a cash donation to Strong Start® with a commitment to raise additional funds through a curling bonspiel. The club’s President, Roy Weber, hopes to encourage other corporations to form a service club within their employee groups. For more information about this unique concept contact Roy at

Strong Start® welcomes another new donor with the gift from the good people at St. Clement Catholic School.
