Assessment Results for 2001-2002 Start-up Session
Letters, Sounds and Words Program

The success of the 10-week program is reflected in the information on these two pages. The results are shown by strand (i.e. letters, sounds, words). Not all children in the program are represented due to the glitches experienced in this pilot project that resulted in the inability of sites to submit data or record accurately. 82% are represented.

  • Overall 86% to 89% of the children (depending on the strand) were successful in making significant to excellent gains!
  • 39% - 55% of the children (depending on the strand) made excellent gains.
  • 31% - 47% of the children (depending on the strand) made significant gains.
  • 11% to 14% of the children (depending on the strand) made some gains.
  • There were about 6 children who made no gains.

Note: Since this data generates from the first session in 20 of the 22 sites, it should be viewed as base-line data for the project. The first session requires a lot of learning for the staff in how to implement the program. As the project progresses and new sites are added growth will be controlled so that there will be a much smaller percentage of sites in their start-up position for any one year.
