Assessment Results Spring 2005 Session
Letters, Sounds and Words Program

Note: The summary of the gains made by the children has 30 categories since children are grouped in 3 areas, with 2 levels of expectation of success and 5 areas of skills tested.

  • Overall 83% to 100% (depending on the category) of the children made significant, excellent or outstanding gains!
  • 808 children are represented in the data
  • 86 schools are included in this summary with an average of 9.4 children per school
  • Over 650 volunteers worked for over 15,400 hours to implement this session. Approximately half of these volunteers have worked in the program before and returned to serve again.

Groups of children being served

  • 74% of the children are thought to be the type of child who just needs extra support for a short time in order to keep pace with peers.
  • 10% of the children are included in the “English as a second language factor” group.
  • 16% of the children are being monitored as possibly having a learning challenge that will result in their needing ongoing support in their early educational career.

Notes:

  • This spring session is for Senior Kindergarten students (and the fall session is for grade one students). Thirty-six percent of these Kindergarten students in the program have been recommended to repeat the program in the fall. They made good gains this spring and it is felt that the program is working for them and that they just need a little longer to learn all the letters, sounds and words.
  • In the first full year of the program (2001/02), 280 children were served. This current year over 1,300 children were in the program (with data submitted for 1,280). Assessment results have been consistent over these first four years of the program.
